Zlatibor mountain region is situated in the southwestern part of Serbia, 230 km from Belgrade, between the Tara and Zlatar mountains. It extends from the area west of Uzice all the way to the Bosnia-Herzegovina border. It is a favourite destination to escape the modern city life. Zlatibor is administratively divided into three municipalities : Čajetina, Užice and Nova Varoš. The railroad Belgrade-Bar passes the region.

The name of the region started to be used in the 18th century, and stems from the Serbian words zlatni, meaning golden, and bor, meaning pine. It refers to a particular type of pine that originates from the mountain.

Zlatibor region is surrounded by mountain peaks. The highest one is Tornik, with 1496 metres. Here you can enjoy a variety of landscapes, different ecosystems, gorges, caves, potholes and mixed woodlands of Scots pine, European black pine, firs, beech, spruce, sessile oak and other species of tree.

When in Zlatibor, do not miss a ride with the historic Sargan Eight Train.Tourists are welcomed in hotels, holiday centers and cottages.

If suffering from thyroid gland, come to the Special Institute for the Prevention and Treatment of Thyroid Gland Disorders. Modern methods are utilized, like ultrasound techniques, diathermy or iodized and galvanic baths.

One legend about Zlatibor says that it got its name because it was so rich with pine tree forests, that the immigrants from Montenegro and Hercegovina boasted: "It is really a pine tree made of gold!". But coming here, you may discover many other interesting legends about it.
