Valjevois located in western Serbia, at less than 100 kilometers from Belgrade. The Kolubara River flows through the downtown depression. Valjevo is among the bigger and developed settlements in Serbia.
The downtown has 61,035 inhabitants. It is situated at an average height above sea level of 185 meters. Throughout the history of the Serbian people, people from Valjevo often played a prominent role in movements for national liberation. Also army leaders and headmen, a number of prominent writers, artists, and scientists originate from Valjevo.
Valjevo is known as between the oldest cities of Serbia. The name Valjevo was, for the first time, found in a document preserved in the Historic Archives in Dubrovnik, that dates from 1393. Valjevo has a favorable geographical position, featured by the vicinity of a number of important traffic routes, as for example Ibarska highway and the railroad line Belgrade - Bar. It is situated only 100 km away from Belgrade, the capital of Serbia.
The Kolubara River originates in Valjevo, formed by the Jablanica and the Obnica Rivers. On Valjevo territory, the Ljubostinja and the Gradac Rivers join the Kolubara River.
