Welcome to Tournai!
Tournai is a beautiful town located on the Scheldt river, in the province of Hainaut from Wallonia which is the predominantly French-speaking part of Belgium . It has 69 440 inhabitants and lies approximately 85 kilometers southwest of Brussels . With an area of over 213 square kilometers it is the largest community in Belgium.
Tournai is a well-preserved medieval old town, one of most interesting buildings from here being the Cathedral of Notre-Dame (built between 1110-1325) and the oldest Belgian Belfry built in 1200, both belonging to the UNESCO World Heritage. Further noteworthy are the Gothic Cloth Hall and the Pont de Trous , a bridge over the Scheldt, which is part of the medieval fortification. The Benedictine Abbey of St. Martin from the 11th Century was secularized in 1797 and now represents the town hall. The building has a neoclassical facade of the 18th Century and is situated in a beautiful park.
Once you get to Tournai you should definitely visit the Musée des Beaux-Arts which houses paintings and a sculpture collection of the Belgian city of Tournai. Bistum Tournai or the diocese of Tournai has existed for over 1,500 years. The diocese now comprises essentially the Belgian province of Hainaut , in the Middle Ages but also a significant part of the former county of Flanders.
