Welcome to Regensburg
Regensburg is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe, with a wealth of landmarks in the centre going back over 2000 years. The city’s brand-new Unesco heritage listing hasn’t gone to its head and the old centre remains an unpretentious, very livable whole. A Roman settlement completed under Emperor Marcus Aurelius, Regensburg became the first and foremost capital of Bavaria, the residence of dukes, kings and bishops, and for 600 years an imperial free city. Outstanding features such as the Old Stone Bridge and the cathedral date from this period in the Middle Ages. Since then the Altstadt seems hardly to have changed – there are still towering patrician’s houses, friendly locals and lots of flourishing businesses.
Oskar Schindler lived in Regensburg for years, and now one of his houses bears a plaque (Am Watmarkt 5) to his achievements commemorated in the Spielberg epic Schindler’s List.
