Located in central western Slovakia, between the Nitra and Handlovka Rivers, Prievidza is the eleventh biggest city in Slovakia, in the Trenčín Region. It is located 69 km east of the regional capital Trencin. Prievidza is the centre where many institutions of regional importance are situated. The city is also called "the green city".
It is divided into six boroughs: Staré mesto, Píly, Necpaly, Kopanice, Zápotôčky and Žabník.
When in Prievidza, tourists must visit the historical churches, the great castles and other cultural monuments. For example, start with The late Roman Church of the Virgin Mary, then the Baroque church, the Parish Church of St. Bartholomew, and also the Piarist Church and Monastery.
For sports lovers, a must know is that in Prievidza are some prominent sporting clubs, like the BC Prievidza, the Prievidza Football Club and the ice hockey Club, that compete in the national league.
