   Welcome to Petrovaradin !!!

Petrovaradin town is a part of the agglomeration of Novi Sad. It lies across the Danube from the main part of Novi Sad, and is built near the Petrovaradin Fortress.

Back to the history of the town, it was founded by Celts, and during the Roman's administration was known under the nam Cusum. The present name of the town comes from the Byzantines. They called it Petrikon, after Saint Peter's name.

Known as the "Gibraltar of the Danube", Petrovaradin Fortress was built between 1692 and 1780 on a hill above the Danube, on the site of the Roman fortress Cusum and the medieval Petrikon. These remains were demolished in 1690. It's model of construction was the French Vauban system of military fortress-building. It was built by the design of Austrian military engineers Marsigli, Wamberg and Keysersfeld.

It's structure has two parts, the Upper and the Lower Fortress. In the Upper Fortress there are about 16 km of underground passages and galleries. In the Lower Fortress, on its name, the Wasserstadt, were situated the officers’ residences, town government, old arsenal, hospital and other public buildings. Beneath the Fortress you'll find the Catholic parish Church having the patron St George, and the Orthodox church is to be found in the town.

If you're passionate about history, find out that here were discovered cultural layers from the Mid-Palaeolithic to the Austrian period. Very important are the remains of a Cistercian monastery dating from 1243, discovered under the Arsenal building, nowadays the Novi Sad City Museum. The Cistercian monastery was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

If you come in July, you can enjoy the EXIT music festival, held here, in the fortress, every year.
