   Welcome to Novi Bečej !!!

Novi Becej town is situated 113km from Belgrade, on the bank of Tisa River.

The town's name was Bečej. Because there were two towns on the banks of Tisa, with the same name, Bečej became Novi Bečej, and the other town became Stari Bečej.

About the town's history, one important thing to know is that over a third of the settlement’s area were destroyed by the grea fire of 1886. There still remained the ruins of a 14th century basilica in Arace, located 14 km from the municipality's center.

For water lovers, good to know is that near the town you'll find the largest hydro structure on the Danube-Tisa Rivers, that is a large concrete dam featuring seven spillways and a navigation dock. Also here tourists can admire one of the greatest technical achievements of the 20th century, the Eiffel Lock. Locals name it Slajz, and it was built out of bare necessity. The gate was built at the confluence of Tisa River and Grand Backi Canal. The lock is thought to be built by the famous Eiffel, moreover that its design resembles the one of Eiffel Tower in Paris.

As most of the Serbian towns, Novi Bečej also offers opportunities for hunting lovers. Come to Novi Bečej in summer and enjoy the fish stew cooking competition and International Art Camp !
