Early Skier Visits Down For Colorado Resorts

Fickle snowfalls have contributed to a 10.65 percent drop in early season skier visits in the state compared to the same time last year, Colorado Ski Country USA reported this evening.
October's storms allowed for an early start at many resorts, but the momentum didn't continue as drier and warmer weather made skiers, especially those based in-state, less inclined to hit the slopes.
"Snow is definitely one of the major factors people consider in whether or not to ski," said Jennifer Rudolph, communications director with the group, which represent 22 ski resorts in the state, not including the four ski areas belonging to Vail Resorts.
Rudolph said 2010, which was a bumper year for snow accumulation and visits, offers a hard comparison. The group believes the weather rather than economic conditions are behind the slump, she said.
"We started off with a bang," she said. "In-state snowboarders and skiers are in tune and savvy with what is happening at their favorite resorts."
The report measured visits from when resorts opened through Dec. 31. Rudolph said member resorts remain hopeful that a few big storms can get them back on track for the rest of the season.
The group's member resorts had 80 percent of their lifts open and were servicing 17,609 acres of terrain.
Much of the country has recorded below average snowfalls and Colorado, with colder temperatures, is better positioned to make snow and keep what it has when the skies don't turn white, the group said.
Vail Resorts earlier this month reported a 15.3 percent drop in early season skier visits at its six resorts, including two based outside Colorado, blaming weak snowfall and limited terrain.
Skier visits represents a person skiing or snowboarding for any part of one day at a mountain resort.
